Some trips are just for fun. Others—like this one—are deeply personal.
To celebrate my son’s 18th birthday, I planned a 10-day journey through Ireland and Scotland—two destinations rich in beauty, history, and personal meaning. As a travel advisor, I approach every itinerary with intention, but this one was curated with both professional expertise and maternal care. The result? A seamless, soulful trip that blended iconic sights with slow travel sensibilities, creating memories we’ll both treasure for a lifetime.

Why Ireland and Scotland Make a Perfect Pair
Ireland and Scotland share deep Celtic roots, dramatic landscapes, and a welcoming spirit—but they each offer their own unique energy. Ireland invites with music, myth, and friendly charm. Scotland stirs something deeper, with its misty mountains, ancient castles, and evocative history. Logistically, the two are easy to combine—we crossed the Irish Sea by scenic ferry—and together they make for a well-balanced and immersive adventure.

What Made It Special
This wasn’t a trip packed to the brim. Instead, it was intentionally paced to allow for presence—late starts, spontaneous detours, and meaningful conversations. There were so many small, standout moments that made the journey personal:
-
Watching the summer sun linger until nearly 10:30 p.m.
-
Feeling a spiritual pull toward the vastness of the Scottish Highlands
-
Sharing laughs with my son during a ghost tour in Edinburgh
-
Enjoying casual chats with locals over fish and chips or on train rides
Let’s talk about that Jameson cocktail class—it was genuinely one of the highlights. It’s fun, hands-on, and yes, delicious. And since the legal drinking age in Ireland is 18, my son could participate, which added an unexpected but memorable bonding moment.
While I’m not a big drinker, we enjoyed tasting our way through both Irish and Scottish whiskeys (and even a few local gins). These shared experiences added an adult layer to the celebration, without dominating the trip.
Advisor Tips for a Trip Like This
Planning a multi-country, meaningful journey doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Here are a few takeaways from our experience:
-
Build in Flex Days: Weather can be moody, and jet lag is real. Leaving space for slower mornings or spontaneous adventures is key.
-
Use a Variety of Transport: We flew, ferried, bused, and trained our way across the region. It kept the pace interesting and allowed us to see more. Buying tickets was easy—either through apps or right at the station.
-
Pack Smart: Don’t bother with an umbrella (they’re everywhere if you need one). Do pack a weatherproof jacket and shoes that can handle rain and cobblestones.
-
Let Nature Set the Tone: Both Ireland and Scotland have landscapes that invite reflection. Leave room in your schedule—and your mind—for that.
-
Private Tours Can Be Worth the Splurge: Our Highland guide played the bagpipes, shared stories from his ancestry, and took us off the beaten path. Those are the experiences you remember forever.
