If you’re dreaming of a Disney vacation but aren’t sure whether you should head west to Disneyland in California or east to Walt Disney World in Florida, you’re definitely not alone!

Both destinations offer the magic, nostalgia, characters, attractions, and experiences families LOVE about Disney, but they definitely are very different vacation experiences!

So, east or west … which one is right for you?

The answer depends on your family, your vacation style, how much time you have, and what you want to experience.

So What’s the Difference?

At first glance, it might seem like the two destinations are pretty similar. After all, both have classic Disney attractions, beloved characters, themed lands, resorts, restaurants, and plenty of magic.

But the biggest difference is SCALE.

Disneyland Resort

Located in Anaheim, California, Disneyland Resort is more compact and consists of:

• Disneyland Park
• Disney California Adventure Park
• Disney Resort hotels
• Downtown Disney District

The two theme parks are located directly across from each other, making it incredibly easy to move between them.

Walt Disney World Resort

Located near Orlando, Florida, Walt Disney World is MUCH larger and includes:

• Magic Kingdom
• EPCOT
• Disney’s Hollywood Studios
• Disney’s Animal Kingdom
• Dozens of resort hotels
• Disney Springs
• Water parks and additional recreational experiences

Because of the size of Walt Disney World, you’ll typically spend more time traveling between destinations and need more time to experience the resort.

How Much Time Do You Have?

This is one of the first questions I’d ask when helping a client decide between the two.

Have a long weekend? Disneyland may be the better choice. Because the two parks are so close together, you can experience quite a bit without needing a week-long vacation. A 3 to 4 night trip can work very well for many Disneyland visitors.

Have a full week? Walt Disney World gives you more room to explore. With four theme parks, numerous resorts, dining experiences, recreation, and entertainment, you can easily fill a week or longer.

If you love the idea of making Disney your entire vacation destination, Walt Disney World offers plenty to keep you busy.

What About the Attractions?

Here’s where things get really interesting.

While you’ll find some familiar attractions at both destinations, Disneyland and Walt Disney World aren’t interchangeable.

Disneyland has some classic attractions that you won’t find at Walt Disney World, including experiences like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.

Disneyland is also home to the original Disneyland Park, which opened in 1955. There’s something pretty special about walking down Main Street, U.S.A. knowing you’re experiencing Walt Disney’s original park.

Walt Disney World offers attractions and experiences across four theme parks. Some major highlights include:

• Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT
• Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios
• Classic attractions and TRON Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom
• Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom
